Question

Based on the forum discussion I would like to ask if you are interested in forming a new version of the EUOIA (name might be discussed), and if yes, what would be the main topics such an organization should cover/not cover?

Since all other intergovernmental organizations but the EUOIA have been overtaken from the old wiki (the old EUOIA data and discussion still exists!), I’m interested in how we can proceed to get a as good as possible map-based approach of a common intergovernmental organizations?

I see the need for such an organization, since in contrast to RW countries, the territories in OGF are much smaller. Possible fields of cooperation are:

  • economy? -> free trade, common standards and regulations, inofficial: agreement on and exchange of natural ressources and companies, mapping: e.g. common companies across several countries, no borders/border control between countries
  • military alliance? -> from my perspective we should have a purely defensive alliance, mapping: e.g. common barracks/battalions
  • infrastructure? -> electricity network between countries, traffic routes, mapping: e.g. coordination and mapping of networks
  • parliament/currency? not required, but a convention of regional (not national) delegates would be nice
  • other complex projects, larger/more expensive than one country is able to handle, e.g. space program, … -> should be done together, since it is more reasonable if multiple countries lieing close to each other do it together
  • further common approaches?

  • Neberly wasn’t part of the ‘old’ EUOIA and i haven’t really thought about a new version
  • economy: common standards and companies getting branches in different countries seem kinda logical to me. I already have contacts with my active neighbors to get our border connections in line. No border control and with that free trade, i think i’d be okay with that.
  • military alliance: i think that would be good, because as you say we are mostly small countries. And though in size Neberly is quite large, i don’t think it will be the largest or the most prominent one in number of inhabitants. So a defensive alliance comes in handy.
  • infrastructure: i already mentioned the border-relations with my active neighbors, but in time that can be brought to a higher level maybe. I like to see Neberly, and my capital Senford, being integrated into a network of railroads and highways. And the same can be done for utilities as electricity and pipelines.
  • parliament/currency: on this i’m not sure. For now i’ve mentioned my own currency (Dank), but if more countries and especially my neighbours are for this, then maybe i’ll decide to join in. And the same goes for an EUAIA-parliament: maybe as more countries are getting closer on different subjects.
  • other complex projects: these wouldn’t be on the top of my list of priorities. As i said is mapping my main thing on this site and i feel that an example as a space program only adds little to that and only for one or a few countries.
  • haven’t really thought about these topics before so i may well change my views over time. *It also depends on how other members think about it.
  • But as i imagine Neberly to be a rich country (comparable to the Netherlands and/or Scandanavian countries) i feel having good relations with nearby countries is a necessity.

BelpheniaProject

  • I would like to let you know that Belphenia would be interested in joining the new version of the EUOIA
  • main topics the organization would cover are infrastructure (roads, energy, aviation, rail infrastructure, traffic regulations, etc.), economy (including free trade, common standards and regulations, and no borders/border control between countries), and currency, and as well as other complex projects

  • I’m still interested in EUOIA or something similar. I haven’t done much research on the backrounds of different Eastern Ulethan countries. Assuming the area is pretty peaceful and stable, something similar to the real world EU would be great.
  • Economy: I’d say something similar to the European Economic Area would be great (free trade, common standards and regulations). Common companies and other common things would also be great if we can get people to join and discuss things easily enough. In fact, not having any common companies would be unrealistic. One of these companies may be Eelandian Seaways which is an Eelandian ferry operator and currently operates to Wyster and Glaster (only Wyster routes currently mapped) but could operate many other routes if people have interest in that.
  • Military alliance: I’d have to have a better understanding on military and international relations in OGF world to comment on this. If there are actual threats in the area, some sort of military alliance would indeed be good to have. UL19a is obviously a big question mark for Eelanti. It’s such a big territory that it could be a threat if it happened to be unfriendly.
  • Infrastructure: I’ve done no electricity network mapping yet, but it could be a future thing if we agree on something and the international relationships are working well. Railways of Eelanti are still unfinished but they are already connected to Neberly. We’ve talked about them only a little bit but my understanding is that there are some trains running across the border. Once I get other neighbours, new connections could be possible as well. And of course Eelanti and Eelandian Seaways are interested in new ferry connections and travel routes.
  • Parliament/currency: Something similar to the EU could work. If there will be a common currency, Eelanti could consider joining that. We’ll have to see what happens.
  • Large projects: If we get enough members, then large projects could work. Eelanti is too small to have a space program but some role inside a common space program would be great. It’s not that unrealistic either considering the real world ESA and even the ISS. (I don’t think Eelanti is a suitable location for any sort of space centers or launch sites though.)
  • I feel that a common union could help a lot. If there was active collaboration and discussions, our understanding of our neigbours and geopolitics could get much better. That would help to create a more realistic map on an international level.
  • And of course common projects can motivate people to map as well. We just need to find the members and a good way to organise the collaboration and discussions.
  • My capital city will be remapped at some point so some EUOIA stuff would fit there if needed.

  • I’m not too sure what you mean by “map-based approach of a common intergovernmental organizations”. I mean, yes, we should be mapping with the idea in mind that there is some sort of (in-character) collaboration with neighbouring countries. But that is already being done, if you’re communicating with neighbouring mappers, that is. I am, for one. I’ve discussed history and other things with every one of my neighbours. Everyone should do that. Is there a need for an in-character organisation (that also serves for OOC purposes) to facilitate that? Not really. Regional standards can exist outside of such orgs.
  • This comes across a bit like overwikification or whatever the admins call it lol.
  • Although, we could use this [EUOIA] as, say, a pin board. Mappers may list different qualities of their nations that are relevant to mapping, and other mappers may use those “pins” in whatever way necessary.
  • For example, those “pins” could be lists of companies from each member country, so anyone may map any of the listed companies in their countries if they so choose. Another example could be lists of main exports and imports from each country, so that we can decide who’s doing the most business with whom and why. This could/would result in more traffic between the countries whose exports/imports fit each other the most, which could be mapped as ferry/shipping routes, more highway connections, etc.
  • So that’s one use of such organisation / union that wouldn’t just be overwikification / over-world-building, but would rather also facilitate and inspire better mapping.
  • Outside of that, if I may allow myself to indulge in some RP / world-building…
  • Since late 20th century, after Igria gained its independence from Keira, both countries have changed their approach to geopolitics. They both practice anti-interventionism and “sovereignism”. They are staunchly against countries intervening in other countries’ way of doing things. “Whatever crimes against humanity may take place, no-one should be allowed to intervene under any circumstances, because national borders are of utmost importance” would be a good summary of this ideology.
  • So, that makes things a bit complicated. Igria would be completely opposed to relaxing its border checks. While Keira would probably have stance similar to UK’s when it was in the EU i.e. no visa required, can work and reside easily, but border checks would be in place, especially for people.
  • Similarly, both countries would be opposed to something like the EU parliament. A Nordic Coucil-esque thing would be more preferable. The bottom line is that they don’t wish to be governed by anyone other than themselves.
  • A big no to common currency, as well.
  • Everything else is fine as long as both countries’ sovereignty and culture are respected and maintained.
  • All of that doesn’t apply to Merhalia, since it’s slightly more open. It’s just that it has a planned, distributist economy, which may or may not struggle to adopt free trade, common standards, etc.

ifgus

  • I would love that to happen. I always wished for a EU-like union (since we have USA-like one it could be perfect).
  • economy- I agree with everything you wish. -military - could even talk about a unified martial force. like you said- we are much smaller than RW countries and a big unified army is much more significant than of several small ones. *infrastructure- maybe a unified highway numbering system could work too. international railways too.
  • parliament/currency- fine by me, for both. in matter of mapping- I mapped a EUOIA department in Noy Tyrrin, much like EU ministries in Europe. Kind of coordination office between the country and the organization also I have a local EUOIA offices mapped. I think a delegate from each member state is cool (like was discussed previously) and so a central office is needed (a place for them to group). p.s if monetary union is what we decide on- we need to map mints.

Izaland Terramorphing Committee

  • I’m happy to see another user enthusiastic about developments in Eastern Uletha.
  • Recently I’m making efforts in trying to involve other mappers in the area, but not everyone is too collaborative.
  • Of course I would be interested in the new EUOIA. When I started mapping Izaland, in late 2018, EUOIA was already settled in the old wiki, so it was a bit difficult for me to enter in it.
  • economy? -> I think that something like a Schengen in Europe could be good in EUOIA. So, for example, the possibility of traveling without need to show passport, but only with the National ID, and cellular roaming.
    • About cellular network, Izaland has 3 main carriers: Izatel, It’s Izy and Rihtacom, I see the second one to have a regional presence, so also cell phone shops could be available here and there (like Vodafone, T-Mobile…).
    • Also, I’m working in trying to promote a network of airlines and flights across the world, but firstly within EU.
    • There is a list of airlines
  • military alliance? Izaland has an auto defense army, and in general is a neutral country, but of course some common barracks and bases could be located in Izaland. We need to work on the naming etc…
  • infrastructure? -> Maybe you noticed, on the wiki there are some pages about infrastructure:
    • Concerning railways, Izaland will surely have a network of day and night international trains.

  • I do agree to your proposal about any sort of union for our countries in Eastern Uletha. I ‘ve been mapping my two countries (Ispelia and Vartasimalia) for some years now, even though not frequently due to lack of time. I was trying to look at the history of the previous organization EUOIA but found out that wikipedia has been almost totally “cleaned”, so no news available anymore. I even cannot find the sections of my countries either, and this is a problem because Ispelia and Vartasimalia are not very visible at the moment, all the news I had inserted in wiki disappeared and it is now diffiult for me to recontruct all the their histories (by the way, do you know if it is possible to find the old data somewhere ?).
  • I am surely for an economic union (like free trade area, cooperation in specific sectors, with possible developments into a politic/defence/monetary evolution for the future, even though this is generally difficult to achieve.
  • I also like the idea of cooperation in the infrastructures (common energy supplies, grids, etc.) and in favour of strengthening the connectivity of my countries within the area (like airlines alliances or one single big airline for different countries, maritime routes, high speed trains connections).
  • Happy to receive further info on the outcome and give further contributions

julijahaller

  • happy to participate

Leowezy

  • since the discussion didn’t attract all that many participants, I am afraid it would end up being an organisation for its own sake.
  • Kojo might join, but I don’t feel like investing too much energy into the discussion itself

Rasmus Rasmusson

  • I might be interested in reviving the EUOIA, although I’m not sure if I will have time to contribute to this actively myself at the moment
  • It was me who came up with the name “EUOIA” originally, but it can of course be changed, especially if the organisation is revised.

Sarepava

  • Karolia is a state which has long valued good international relations, so we would definitely wish to be part of such a union. (Meridonia would probably join by default or at least have extensive treaties).
  • most important area would be free trade. I would like to have something akin to the Common Market, if not the full EU extent of free movement of people and goods, along with common quality and safety standards.
  • If not fully open borders (Schengen), then minimal customs and residence restrictions. Common study and research programmes and sharing of intellectual and educational resources. Shared cultural funds and agencies.
  • Integration and common standards for international travel, epecially trains and flights. (even though we use a different rail gauge…)
  • I think military alliances would best be dealt with under a separete organisation/treaty. The OGF world seems quite peaceful and Karolia isn’t a big military nation.

SwissCrusader

  • If such an organisation is declared again, it would be logical for Älved, Boscunis and Brevinfeld to be part of it. They are sparsely populated countries (between 2 and 6 million each), but they are part of trade unions, and neighbors depend on international trade routes and natural resources in these 3 countries.
  • Also the culture and religion is similar to the neighbors : Alvedic is related to Mergan, the conlang spoken in East Alved and Boscunis is an Uletarephian independant branch but borrowed some Ingerish terms from the neighbors, and Brevinian is related to Karolian and Keiran languages. The religion is mostly OGF-equivalent-of-catholic related to the holy see of Citta di Peritano, Darcodia.
  • The only exception would be Vyzdland, which is a failed state mostly populated with natives, former nomads related to UL19a, with parts of it occupied by his neighbors, and has been in civil war for several years so most intl traffic ceased to pass through the area, so it should stay out of the union until further notice.

tars

  • I’m interested in a new version of the EUOIA I’d like that it covers all the topics bellow, but due to the extension I see difficult to implement, for example, common infrastructure. The regional delegates, the militare defense alliance, and free market trade I think are posible.
  • Maybe there are smaller clusters, for example , on the islands, with common infrastructure plans, a common currency, a common market (Full EU style)

tule00

  • And I do think we should revise the name.
  • I see the need for such an organization, since in contrast to RW countries, the territories in OGF are much smaller. Agreed 100%. Countries like Reeland can’t be so economically stable on their own, and I believe the same applies to Mergany in a way.
  • economy? This, in my opinion, should be the #1 priority of the Union – something along the lines of the Schengen zone.
  • military alliance? I support it. It is a great way to explain how our countries are not war-torn despite being small yet strategically important.
  • infrastructure? Not against this, but I think it’s less of a priority. Especially the traffic routes – as someone once said, OGF-Earth is already full of highways, and we do not need to encourage people to map more, you know? The electricity network is a great idea though.
  • parliament/currency? I am not against a parliament, but I believe others would find it too much. As for a common currency, I don’t mind either way.
  • other complex projects: We definitely should do it as an organization if we do it at all, but it shouldn’t be our primary focus.
  • My additional idea would be for the Union to be a collection of multiple organizations, so that if one country wants e.g. free trade but not a military alliance, they can just apply for the former and not be part of the latter. However, I don’t know if this makes things more complicated, so it’s just a thought.
  • All in all, we definitely need an organization, we just need to work out the details. We should ask the owners of potential member countries for their opinions, if we didn’t already. But to me, it seems like a good idea to have each country decide which parts of the organization they want and don’t want to participate in.
